If you’re in any way active on social media, you’ve probably already heard about the rapid and meteoric rise of TikTok. This platform has risen from relative obscurity to become one of the most popular platforms around for certain age demographics, and it’s becoming more and more popular with others, too. There’s no way you can be a social media influencer or a brand without having an awareness of TikTok, let alone what its core demographic might be.
If that is you – if you’re looking for ways to market your content or product on TikTok, but you’re not sure how to begin – then you’re probably asking yourself what the average age is of TikTok users. It’s a good question with a relatively straightforward answer, but if you’re looking to market on TikTok, you shouldn’t simply be looking at age as the only marker you need to think about. Of course, we’ll go into the average age of most TikTok users, but bear in mind this isn’t the only statistic you need for marketing success on the platform.
General age of TikTok Users
So, what is the general age demographic of TikTok users? This is a pretty easy question to answer. Around 41% of TikTok users belong to the 16-24 demographic, so this is the single most populous age group of TikTok users. If you’re looking to market your content to this demographic, then you absolutely must have a TikTok profile, as this is the most popular social network for that age group. Without regular TikTok content, you simply won’t reach that group as effectively.
Around 50% of TikTok’s global audience – that is, half of the entire audience for the app around the world, including in popular hotspots like China and India – is aged below 34. 26% of that group is between 18 and 24. TikTok has around 800 million active users around the world, so that means that 400 million of those users are under the age of 34 and around 200 million are at or below the age of 24. That’s a pretty sizeable proportion of the user base!
It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that TikTok’s demographics skew towards younger audiences. The platform’s emphasis on short-form video content makes a lot of sense to younger viewers who may be much busier or have more demands on their time. In addition, TikTok is to some extent continuing the work of apps like Snapchat, which also has a demographic that skews particularly young. With these things in mind, TikTok’s appeal for the 18-24 demographic becomes much clearer.
As we said earlier, though, it’s important to focus on more than just the age group of TikTok’s average user when it comes to marketing (or even just understanding the data). TikTok skews young, yes, but that doesn’t necessarily explain the app’s massive success. There are some who say that “adults” just don’t understand TikTok and that it’s always going to be an app primarily designed for young people. That ignores the fact that many social media platforms were originally intended for younger people before eventually attracting an older audience.
What’s the dominant country using TIkTok?
There are other statistics we need to look to if we want to understand how best to utilise TikTok as a social media platform. One of these is the nationality of its users. Despite attaining a truly global reach, the vast majority of TikTok users are still based in the app’s native China. In 2019 alone, 80% of the total time spent on TikTok was spent in China. Around 43% of its new users were from India, so these are two markets that social media executives should be paying very close attention to indeed. Despite this, 26.5 million active users hail from the USA, so the app is gaining traction worldwide.
As of 2019, around 68% of TikTok users simply watch other people’s content, while 55% of users will go on to create video content of their own. This is interesting when we consider the age demographics of TikTok, because it tells us something about how young people approach social media in the modern era. Most people seem content to simply passively consume content on TikTok rather than entering into the influencer sphere for themselves.
So there you have it: we’ve explained how the age demographics on TikTok work, as well as some other important statistics pertaining to the user breakdown on TikTok. As the app grows, we’re likely to see more and more different kinds of people approach it and sign up for it; that’s how every social media platform has worked in the past. How these new-age groups and nationalities approach TikTok remains to be seen; that’s just one of the many exciting things about the platform!
